Choose your pathway

Pathway to Medicine is a free, nonprofit resource built for students and parents navigating healthcare careers. Whether you are a middle school student just beginning to wonder what it takes to become a doctor, a high school junior mapping out your coursework, a college sophomore preparing for the MCAT®, or a parent trying to support your child without overstepping, this site was built for you.

What You Will Find Here

We have organized 282 pages of evidence-based content around the way you actually think about your future. Instead of burying useful information behind paywalls or wrapping it in marketing language, we give you the truth with receipts. Every statistic is sourced. Every recommendation is grounded in data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC®), the Bureau of Labor Statistics, official licensing boards, and peer-reviewed research.

The site is structured by student level. If you are in middle school, you can explore what medicine even means, discover healthcare careers that match your interests, and find STEM programs and camps in your area. If you are in high school, you can plan your coursework, find clinical experience and volunteering opportunities, prepare for standardized tests, and start building a college application that reflects who you really are. If you are an undergraduate, you can map your pre-med timeline, prepare for the MCAT®, write your personal statement, and navigate the AMCAS® or AACOMAS® application process step by step.

For Parents and Families

Parents play a critical role in this journey, and we have an entire section dedicated to helping you support your student at every stage. From understanding the medical school application timeline to knowing what to do when your child is not accepted, our parent guides assume zero prior knowledge of the medical education system and walk you through everything in plain language. We also address the emotional side of this process, including how to protect your own wellbeing while your child pursues one of the most demanding career paths in the country.

Explore 39 Healthcare Careers

Medicine is not just one path. We profile 39 healthcare careers, from physician (MD and DO) to physician assistant, nurse practitioner, dentist, pharmacist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and dozens more. Each career profile includes education requirements, licensing details, salary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, day-to-day responsibilities, and a clear breakdown of how to get started at every student level. Side-by-side comparison pages help you weigh options like MD vs. DO, PA vs. NP, and the true cost of each career path.

State-Specific Resources

We currently cover four states in depth: Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Each state section includes 14 pages of verified, locally relevant information organized by student level. You will find specific programs, hospitals that accept volunteers, research opportunities, scholarship databases, education program directories, professional organizations, and licensing regulations. Every institution listed has been individually verified against official sources, with contact information, tuition figures, and application URLs pulled directly from program websites. More states are on the way.

Academic Resources and Exam Prep

Our academic resources section covers 44 topics, from study guides in biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and biochemistry to exam preparation for the MCAT®, DAT®, OAT®, GRE®, USMLE®, COMLEX-USA®, NCLEX®, and PANCE®. We also cover study skills like active learning, spaced repetition, time management, and test-taking strategies. Every resource recommendation follows our free-first rule: we point you to Khan Academy®, OpenStax, AAMC® official materials, and other free tools before we ever mention a paid alternative. We do not place affiliate links, and we never will.

Who Built This Site

Pathway to Medicine was created by a student who spent all of high school wishing someone would just give straight answers about getting into medicine. Nobody did, so he built this site. The entire project is free, fully transparent, and funded by donations. There are no paywalls, no five-figure consulting packages, and no sponsored content. Every dollar donated goes directly toward keeping this resource available to every student who needs it.

How to Get Started

If you are not sure where to begin, visit our How to Use This Site page for a guided walkthrough. You can also jump directly into the section that matches your current stage by choosing your pathway above. If you are a middle school student, start with our middle school hub. If you are a high school student, head to the high school section. College students should begin with the undergraduate hub. Parents can start with the parent guide overview. And if you want to explore local programs, use our interactive state map to find verified resources near you.

We read every message you send through our contact form. If something is wrong, missing, or confusing, tell us. This site gets better because of you.

Joshua, Founder of Pathway to Medicine

I spent years searching for clear, actionable guidance on getting into medicine and kept finding the same recycled advice: be well-rounded, follow your passion, take a holistic approach. None of it explained what to actually do, step by step, semester by semester. So I built the resource I wished someone had given me. I'm Joshua, a college freshman, EMT, and Eagle Scout, and I'm still figuring it out alongside you.
