Healthcare education in Maine
Maine has one medical school within its borders: the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNE COM) in Biddeford/Portland, which is the only osteopathic medical school in New England. For students interested in an MD degree with a Maine focus, the Tufts University School of Medicine Maine Track program, developed in partnership with MaineHealth, provides community-based medical education primarily in Maine.
Maine is home to 1 DO school.
Pipeline programs and pre-med resources
UNE COM is recognized by U.S. News as a leader in osteopathic medical education and emphasizes training physicians to serve New England communities. In 2025, UNE COM relocated to a newly constructed campus in Portland, bringing together all of UNE’s health professions programs on an interprofessional campus.
The Maine Medical Association provides free AMA and MMA membership for UNE COM students and connects students with practicing physicians for mentoring.
