Healthcare education in Texas

Texas has one of the largest medical education systems in the country, with 13 MD schools and 3 DO schools. Texas public medical schools use the TMDSAS (Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service) application system, which is separate from AMCAS. Private Texas schools (Baylor College of Medicine) use AMCAS. The state has a strong emphasis on training physicians who will practice in Texas.

Texas is home to 11 MD schools and 3 DO schools.

Pipeline programs and pre-med resources

Important
Texas public medical schools use TMDSAS, not AMCAS. TMDSAS has a single application and different timeline than AMCAS. Applications typically open in May, and Texas schools practice rolling admissions with pre-match and match cycles. Familiarize yourself with the TMDSAS process at tmdsas.com.
Tip
The Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) is a Texas state legislature-funded pipeline that provides guaranteed medical school admission for economically disadvantaged Texas residents who meet program requirements. JAMP partners with 14 Texas medical schools and 68 undergraduate institutions. Students receive scholarships, mentoring, MCAT preparation, and two summer internships. Requirements include Texas residency, Pell Grant eligibility (or SAI of -1500 to 7000), and a 3.4 GPA (as of Entry Year 2027). Details at texasjamp.org.

Other programs include the Texas Medical Association summer preceptorship program and MD Anderson Cancer Center summer research programs for undergraduate students.
