Healthcare education in Delaware

Delaware does not currently have a medical school within its borders. However, Delaware residents have strong connections to nearby medical schools in Pennsylvania (Philadelphia is less than an hour from Wilmington), Maryland, and New Jersey. ChristianaCare, the state’s largest health system based in Wilmington, serves as a major clinical training site for medical students and residents from regional programs.

Pipeline programs and pre-med resources

ChristianaCare operates residency programs and provides clinical rotation sites for medical students from Jefferson (Sidney Kimmel), Drexel, and other regional medical schools. This creates shadowing and clinical volunteering opportunities for Delaware pre-med students.

The University of Delaware in Newark offers strong pre-health advising and science programs. Delaware State University, a historically Black university in Dover, also supports students pursuing healthcare careers.

Delaware AHEC provides health careers pipeline programs for students throughout the state, including mentoring, career exploration, and preparation for health professions education.

Delaware SEED Scholarship
State scholarship for Delaware residents attending eligible institutions. Apply via FAFSA. Details through the Delaware Department of Education.

State Loan Repayment
Delaware participates in the State Loan Repayment Program for healthcare providers in shortage areas. Check current terms through the Delaware Division of Public Health.

Proximity Advantage
Delaware’s location between Philadelphia and Baltimore means students can access clinical volunteering, research, and shadowing at world-class medical centers (Penn, Jefferson, Johns Hopkins) within a short drive. This geographic advantage partially compensates for the lack of an in-state medical school.
