Welcome to the middle school section of Pathway to Medicine. If you are in grades 6, 7, or 8, this is your starting point. You do not need to know exactly what you want to do with your life yet. Most adults did not figure that out in middle school, and many of them will tell you they are still figuring it out. What you can do right now is explore, ask questions, and start building habits and experiences that will give you more choices later. That is what this section is about.
What This Section Covers
We have organized this section into 11 pages that cover everything a middle school student might want to know about healthcare careers and how to start preparing for them. Here is what you will find.
What Is Medicine? If you have ever wondered what doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers actually do all day, this page is for you. We explain what medicine is, how the healthcare system works, and what it means to take care of people for a living. No jargon, no complicated words, just a clear introduction.
Healthcare Careers to Explore Medicine is not just one job. There are over 39 different healthcare careers we cover on this site, from physician to physical therapist, from dentist to genetic counselor. This page introduces you to a range of careers at an age-appropriate level so you can start figuring out what sounds interesting to you.
Science Courses That Matter The science classes you take in middle school build the foundation for everything that comes later. This page explains which courses matter most and why, so you can make smart choices about your schedule.
Volunteering and Community Service Helping others is one of the best ways to learn whether healthcare is right for you. This page covers volunteering opportunities that are available to middle school students, how to find them, and what you can learn from them.
STEM Programs and Camps Summer programs, after-school clubs, and camps that focus on science, technology, engineering, and math can give you hands-on experiences that your regular classes might not offer. This page helps you find programs near you.
Health Science Clubs Does your school have a health science club? If it does, this page explains how to get involved. If it does not, we show you how to start one.
Books and Media Books, documentaries, podcasts, and YouTube channels that make science and medicine come alive. All recommendations are age-appropriate and free or available at your local library.
Preparing for High School The transition from middle school to high school is a big deal. This page covers what to expect, how to plan your high school coursework, and what you can do now to set yourself up for success.
Wellness and Mental Health Taking care of your body and mind is not just important for your health. It is important for your ability to do well in school, build friendships, and handle the stress that comes with growing up. This page covers sleep, stress, exercise, and when to ask for help.
Making Healthy Choices Substance awareness, digital wellness, nutrition, and building healthy habits that will serve you for the rest of your life. We present the facts without lecturing.
You Do Not Need to Have It All Figured Out
We want to be clear about something: you do not need to decide in middle school that you are going to be a doctor. Most people who become doctors did not make that decision until college, and some did not decide until after working in another career for years. What middle school is for is exploring. Try different things. Take science classes and see if you enjoy them. Volunteer somewhere and see how it feels to help people. Read a book about the human body and see if it sparks your curiosity. If medicine turns out not to be your thing, that is completely fine. The skills you build by exploring, critical thinking, communication, compassion, discipline, will serve you no matter what career you choose.
A Note for Parents
If you are a parent reading this page, welcome. We have an entire section of this site built specifically for you. Visit the parents section for guides on supporting your middle schooler, understanding the medical education timeline, and navigating the emotional and financial dimensions of this journey. The most important thing you can do right now is encourage your child’s curiosity without putting pressure on them to commit to a specific career. Middle school is for exploration, not for making life decisions.
How to Use This Section
Start with whatever page sounds most interesting to you. You do not need to read them in order. If you are curious about what doctors do, start with What Is Medicine? If you want to find a summer program, jump to STEM Programs and Camps. If you want to know which classes to take, go to Science Courses That Matter. Every page links to related content, so you can follow your curiosity wherever it leads. And if you have a question that is not answered here, use the contact form to ask us. We read every message.
Every page in this section is written at a reading level designed for students in grades 6 through 8. We use simple vocabulary, short sentences, and real-world examples. We do not talk down to you, and we do not pretend that everything about the healthcare journey is easy or straightforward. When a topic is complicated, we break it down into pieces you can understand. When the truth is that something is hard, competitive, or expensive, we say so, because you deserve honest information, not cheerful marketing. This is the same approach we use across every section of this site, adapted for your age group.
If you find a page that is too simple or too hard, let us know through the contact form. We are constantly improving this content based on feedback from real students and parents. And if you are a middle school student who is ready for more advanced content (some of you are), you are welcome to explore the high school section at any time. There are no gates on this site. Go wherever your curiosity takes you.
