What are BS/MD programs?
BS/MD (or BA/MD) programs are combined undergraduate and medical school programs that offer qualified high school students a conditional or guaranteed seat in medical school upon completion of their undergraduate degree. These programs typically span 6 to 8 years total, compared to the traditional 8-year path of a 4-year undergraduate degree followed by 4 years of medical school. Many programs reduce or waive the MCAT requirement for students who maintain academic standing throughout the undergraduate portion.
According to AAMC data, approximately 44 active combined baccalaureate-MD programs exist across 24 states and the District of Columbia as of the 2025-2026 application cycle. Competition for these seats is intense, with acceptance rates often below 5%, and some programs admitting fewer than 10 students per year.
