Pathway to Medicine is free. Every page, every career profile, every state resource directory, every study guide, every exam prep page, every tool. Free. No paywall. No “premium tier.” No $99/month subscription for the “good” content. Free.

I want to explain why, because in a world where everything seems to cost money, “free” can feel suspicious. If the product is free, you must be the product, right? Not here. Let me explain.

We Are a Nonprofit

Pathway to Medicine, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, registered in Connecticut, with EIN 41-4916973. That means we are legally structured as a charitable organization. We do not have shareholders. We do not distribute profits. Every dollar that comes in (through tax-deductible donations) goes directly to maintaining the site, paying for hosting and infrastructure, and supporting the mission of providing free, honest healthcare career guidance to students and parents. You can verify our nonprofit status through the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search tool. We are real, we are legal, and we are accountable.

No Affiliate Links. No Sponsored Content. No Advertising.

This is where we differ from almost every other pre-med resource website on the internet. We do not use affiliate links. When we recommend a free resource (Khan Academy®, OpenStax, AAMC® official materials), we link directly to the resource with no tracking parameters, no referral codes, and no financial incentive. We do not earn a commission when you click a link on our site. We do not accept sponsored content. No company has paid us to mention their product, service, or program. When we list a school, a program, or a resource, it is because we believe it serves our audience, not because someone paid for placement. We do not sell advertising. You will never see banner ads, pop-up ads, or interstitial ads on this site. Your attention is not a product we sell to advertisers.

Why does this matter? Because affiliate links, sponsored content, and advertising create conflicts of interest. A website that earns a commission every time you sign up for a test prep course has a financial incentive to recommend that course, whether or not it is the best option for you. A site that accepts sponsored content from a medical school has an incentive to present that school favorably, regardless of its actual quality. A site funded by advertising has an incentive to maximize page views and engagement, even if that means sensationalizing content or creating clickbait. We have none of these incentives. Our only incentive is to provide the most accurate, useful, and honest information we can, because that is the mission, and it is the only reason this site exists.

Why Free Matters for Equity

Healthcare career guidance should not be a luxury good. A student in a low-income household deserves the same quality of information as a student whose parents can afford a private admissions consultant. A first-generation college student deserves the same roadmap as a student whose family includes three generations of physicians. A student in a rural town with no nearby medical schools or hospitals deserves the same access to program directories, application guides, and career profiles as a student in Boston or New York City.

The for-profit advice industry, by its nature, serves the students who can pay. We serve everyone. Our state resource pages list every relevant program regardless of prestige or tuition. Our career profiles present honest salary data and training requirements, including the professions that offer strong returns on modest educational investments. Our study guides recommend free resources first, every time. We believe that information equity is a prerequisite for healthcare equity, because students who do not know their options cannot pursue them.

How You Can Help

If this site has helped you, there are several ways to support the mission. Share it with a student, parent, teacher, or counselor who could benefit. Every person who discovers this site is one more person who does not have to navigate the pathway to medicine alone. If you are able, consider making a tax-deductible donation. Every dollar helps us maintain the site, verify our state resource data, and build new content. And if you find something on the site that is wrong, outdated, or missing, tell us. Your feedback makes every page better, and I read every message that comes in. This site is free because it has to be. The students who need it most are the ones who can least afford to pay for it. That is the principle, and we will not compromise on it.
