What are BS/DO programs?
BS/DO (or BA/DO) programs are combined undergraduate and osteopathic medical school programs that offer qualified high school students a conditional or guaranteed seat at an osteopathic medical school upon completion of their undergraduate degree. Like their BS/MD counterparts, these programs typically span 6 to 8 years total. Many programs reduce or waive the MCAT requirement for students who maintain academic benchmarks.
Osteopathic physicians (DOs) are fully licensed physicians with identical practice rights to allopathic physicians (MDs) in all 50 states. Since the 2020 merger of the allopathic and osteopathic residency match systems, DO and MD graduates compete in a single, unified residency match through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The primary distinction is in training philosophy: osteopathic education emphasizes a whole-person approach and includes training in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT).
How to use this page
The BS/DO landscape differs significantly from BS/MD in one critical way: a single institution, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), operates a massive Early Acceptance Program (EAP) network with over 150 affiliated undergraduate colleges across 30+ states. The majority of BS/DO “programs” are partnerships funneling into LECOM.
We have organized this page into two sections: standalone BS/DO programs (where the osteopathic medical school is not LECOM) and the LECOM Early Acceptance Program network.
